These are three different fragrances, not three strengths of one. Buy Musamam White Intense (£31.99) if you want a creamy coconut and sandalwood scent with a spicy citrus opening. Buy Musamam Black Intense (£31.99) if you want lavender and sage over a dark, bittersweet cocoa base. Buy the original Musamam (£28.99) if you want something dry and smoky: saffron, cedar and incense.
If you are unsure, start with Black Intense. It has the highest Fragrantica rating of the three and costs the same as White Intense. White Intense is the most divisive on skin, so it is the one to be surest about before you buy.
Lattafa has released three bottles under the Musamam name: the original in 2022, Musamam White Intense in 2023 and Musamam Black Intense in 2025 (launch years as listed on Fragrantica, checked October 2026). The word “Intense” suggests a stronger version of the original. That is not what you get. Each one has its own note pyramid, and only a few notes repeat between them.
That is why people order the wrong one. Fragrantica reviewers of the original Musamam include buyers who meant to order White Intense and ended up with the smoky one instead. This guide sets the three side by side, using the note lists published by Fragrantica and Lattafa, so you can pick the right bottle first time.
What is the difference between Musamam, White Intense and Black Intense?
The quickest way to see it is the notes. These are the pyramids as Fragrantica lists them. We checked each against Lattafa’s own listings (lattafa.com for the original, Lattafa USA for the two Intense versions), and they agree.

Ratings and launch years checked on Fragrantica in October 2026; ratings move as votes come in, and the original has far fewer votes than the other two. Lattafa’s own page for the original lists “cistus concrete” in its notes section and labdanum in its description. Labdanum is the resin taken from the cistus plant, so the two listings describe the same material.
Look across the three cards and the overlap is small. Geranium and cedar appear in the original and Black Intense. Mahonial, a fresh lily-of-the-valley material, appears in both Intense versions. Lavender appears in the original and Black Intense. White Intense shares almost nothing with the original: no saffron, no incense, no cedar. It is built around coconut and sandalwood instead.
What does Musamam White Intense smell like?
On paper, Musamam White Intense opens with spice and citrus, moves into creamy coconut and sunny ylang-ylang, and settles on sandalwood, musk and benzoin. Fragrantica lists it as an oriental floral, and its strongest voted accords are woody, warm spicy, coconut, sweet and citrus.
In practice, wearers disagree more about this one than either of its siblings. On Fragrantica’s Musamam White Intense page, some reviewers say the coconut leads, while others barely notice it and mostly get a spicy sandalwood. A recurring complaint is a sharp, almost pickle-like edge to the sandalwood, especially in a new bottle. Many say it softens and blends after a few months of resting, though some still found that edge after ageing. If you have not rested a Lattafa before, our guide to maceration explains what to do.
The White Intense product page calls it a Versace Crystal Noir alternative. Several Fragrantica reviewers make that comparison favourably, and one says the Versace is the better-quality fragrance. Treat it as a family resemblance (spice, coconut, sandalwood) rather than a copy. The full comparison sits on the product page, so we will not repeat it here.
How long does it last? Many Fragrantica reviewers report 8 to 12 hours or more, with strong projection. A smaller group found it faded faster on their skin. It is unisex by listing; reviewers variously call it feminine, masculine or neither, which fits a scent where skin decides whether the coconut or the woods come forward.
What does Musamam Black Intense smell like?
Musamam Black Intense starts herbal and aromatic: lavender, sage and nutmeg with bergamot. It turns woody and slightly rosy through cedar, geranium and Rosyfolia, then dries down to cocoa, tonka and maple over patchouli. Fragrantica’s top voted accords are woody, fresh spicy, aromatic and lavender, with vanilla and sweet further down.
The headline ingredient is Cocoa Pulse. According to Fragrantica’s launch article, it was created by Givaudan exclusively for Lattafa by co-distilling cocoa butter absolute with Akigalawood, and Givaudan perfumer Jordi Fernández built the formula around it. He describes it as a spicy, bittersweet gourmand.
Wearer reports on Fragrantica’s Black Intense page split on the opening. Some enjoy the lavender and sage straight away; others find the first stretch harsh or messy and say it improves as it settles. Most describe a chocolate or cocoa dry-down, often with maple, though a few found the cocoa faint under the woods.
How long does it last? Many reviewers say it lasts a very long time and projects strongly, so a light hand is enough. One rated its performance as only average. It is listed as unisex, but its aromatic, woody profile leans masculine for most wearers, which is why it also appears in our best Lattafa perfumes for men list.
What does the original Lattafa Musamam smell like?
The original Lattafa Musamam is the driest of the three. Saffron, mandarin and lavender open it; amberwood, cedar and geranium carry the heart; akigalawood, incense and labdanum make a resinous, smoky base. Fragrantica’s top accords are woody, amber and warm spicy, followed by oud and smoky.
Reviewers on Fragrantica’s Musamam page most often describe smoke, woods, incense and a leathery feel. Opinion on the opening is split: some find it harsh, even rubbery, at first, while others call it smooth and well blended. Many describe it as masculine-leaning. Longevity reports range from around five hours to lasting on clothing for far longer, with one reviewer calling it moderate on their skin.
If you like incense, it belongs on your shortlist alongside the other resinous bottles in our frankincense and incense guide. It has the lowest rating of the three on Fragrantica, but from far fewer votes, and its style is narrower: it is for people who want smoke rather than sweetness.
How do the Musamam prices compare?
At Royal Scents, Musamam White Intense and Musamam Black Intense are both £31.99 for 100ml, and the original Musamam is £28.99 for 100ml. That works out at about 32p per ml for the two Intense versions and 29p per ml for the original.
With only £3 between the cheapest and the dearest, price should not decide this one. Nothing in the published note lists or Lattafa’s descriptions marks either Intense version out as a stronger concentration than the original, despite the name. Choose on scent: White Intense is the only one built around coconut and sandalwood, Black Intense is the cocoa and lavender option, and the original is the dry, smoky choice.
Musamam White Intense vs Black Intense: which is better for winter?
Black Intense and the original are the natural cold-weather picks. Black Intense has cocoa, tonka and maple for warmth, and the original has incense and labdanum. For more cold-weather options across the range, see our best Lattafa winter perfumes guide.
White Intense is the most flexible. The citrus and coconut make it work in warmer weather, while the sandalwood and benzoin give it enough body for autumn. If you want one Musamam for most of the year, it is the most adaptable; if you want a dedicated winter evening scent, Black Intense is the safer choice.
Can you layer the Musamam fragrances?
You can, but there is no official Lattafa pairing and we have not seen a consistent wearer recommendation for combining two Musamams. Because White Intense and the original share almost no notes, they are not natural layering partners. Black Intense pairs more easily with sweeter scents: our guide to wearing Lattafa Angham suggests it under Angham for a more masculine take, as both have lavender and a cocoa note. For a boozier alternative at a similar price, compare Black Intense with Teriaq Intense in our Teriaq Intense review.
Choose Musamam White Intense if you love creamy coconut and sandalwood, you liked Versace Crystal Noir, and you are happy to let a new bottle rest before you judge it.
Choose Musamam Black Intense if you want dark, bittersweet cocoa with lavender, a winter evening scent with strong projection, and the best-rated of the three on Fragrantica.
Choose the original Musamam if you want a dry, smoky saffron, cedar and incense scent with almost no sweetness.
Skip White Intense if sharp sandalwood notes bother you or you are not prepared to rest a new bottle. Skip Black Intense and the original if herbal lavender openings or smoky incense have never suited you.
