The short answer
Tonka bean smells warm, sweet and slightly dry: think toasted almond, fresh hay and a hint of cherry, with a faint tobacco edge. It reads like vanilla’s spicier, less sugary cousin. The smell comes mainly from coumarin. In Lattafa bottles it ranges from fresh (Fakhar, £16.99) to dessert-rich (Khamrah, £22.99).
Tonka turns up in a huge number of note pyramids, usually in the base, and most shoppers never stop to ask what it actually adds. That matters, because tonka changes character depending on what sits around it. Next to lavender it smells clean and barbershop-warm. Next to dates and cinnamon it smells like a bakery. Next to tuberose it turns creamy and soft.
This guide explains what tonka bean smells like on its own, how it differs from vanilla, what coumarin is, and then groups seven in-stock Lattafa bottles by the style of tonka they use, so you can pick the one that suits you rather than the one with the loudest reputation.
What does tonka bean smell like?
The tonka bean is the wrinkled, almond-shaped black seed of the cumaru tree (Dipteryx odorata), native to northern South America. Dried and cured, it gives off a smell that most people describe with four words:
- Almond and marzipan. A sweet, nutty roundness, closer to amaretto than to roasted nuts.
- Hay. A dry, sun-warmed, slightly grassy facet. This is the coumarin speaking, and it is what stops tonka from feeling purely edible.
- Caramel and cherry. Some wearers pick up a burnt-sugar or cherry-stone sweetness, especially in the first hour of a base note.
- Tobacco. A faint, dry, pipe-tobacco warmth that becomes more obvious when tonka is paired with spices or leather.
On skin, tonka is a slow note. It rarely leads a perfume; it rises in the dry-down, once the citrus and florals have burned off, and gives the final hours a warm, powdery-sweet floor. That is why you will almost always find it listed in the base.
Coumarin: the molecule behind tonka
Most of tonka’s character comes from coumarin, an organic compound that Encyclopaedia Britannica describes as having “the characteristic odour of new-mown hay”. Its presence in the tonka bean was first noted in 1820, and the English chemist William Henry Perkin first made it in the laboratory in 1868. Britannica also notes it is used in perfumes and flavourings.
In practice, that means two things for a fragrance wearer. First, the “hay” and “almond” facets you smell in a tonka base are largely coumarin. Second, a perfume can list “tonka bean” and use the extract, a synthetic coumarin, or a blend of both; brands rarely say which, and Lattafa does not publish that detail for any bottle below. What you can judge is the effect on skin, which is what the picks section focuses on.
Tonka bean vs vanilla: what separates them
Tonka and vanilla often sit side by side in the same base, so it is easy to treat them as the same thing. They are not. Vanilla’s signature molecule is vanillin; tonka’s is coumarin, and they pull a perfume in different directions.
| Trait | Tonka bean | Vanilla |
|---|---|---|
| Main facets | Almond, hay, cherry, tobacco | Custard, cream, sweet resin |
| Texture | Drier, slightly powdery, textured | Rounder, smoother, softer |
| Sweetness | Sweet but restrained | Sweeter and more edible |
| Best partners | Lavender, spices, leather, woods | Florals, caramel, amber, musk |
A useful rule: if a perfume smells sweet but still a little “grown-up” and dry, tonka is probably doing that work. If it smells creamy and edible, vanilla is in charge. Many of the bottles below use both, and the balance between them is what gives each its personality. If you want vanilla as the star, our guide to the best Lattafa vanilla perfumes covers that side in full, from milky skin scents to dark, boozy vanillas.
Best tonka perfumes UK: seven Lattafa bottles, grouped by style
Every bottle here lists tonka (or tonka bean) in its pyramid on Fragrantica, checked in October 2026, and every one was in stock at Royal Scents when we wrote this. Prices are at time of writing, for 100ml Eau de Parfum. Ratings are Fragrantica community averages, not our own scores.
Fresh-aromatic tonka
Here tonka sits under lavender, herbs and apple, and acts as a soft, warm cushion rather than a sweet treat. This is the cleanest way to wear the note.
1. Lattafa Fakhar: tonka at its cleanest
Apple, bergamot and ginger open; lavender, sage, juniper and geranium form a barbershop-fresh heart; tonka bean, cedar, amberwood and vetiver make up the base (per Fragrantica’s Fakhar Black listing). The tonka arrives late and simply warms the woods, so it reads soft and polished rather than sweet. Fragrantica rates it 4.19 from 8,369 votes. It is marketed for men and suits the office and daytime. Our Lattafa Fakhar review covers how it wears hour by hour.

2. Lattafa Jasoor: tonka with tobacco and leather
Jasoor shows how tonka bonds with tobacco. Apple, cardamom and bergamot lead into tobacco, lavender and geranium, then a base of tonka, leather, vetiver and patchouli (Fragrantica). The tonka gives the leather a gentle warmth and brings out the tobacco’s dry sweetness. It holds 4.40 on Fragrantica from more than 1,800 votes, which is high for any bottle. Listed for women and men, most reviewers find it wears masculine, and it is best from autumn to spring. More detail in our Lattafa Jasoor review.

Gourmand tonka
In these three, tonka works alongside vanilla and sweet notes, adding a nutty, almond-like depth that keeps them from tasting one-dimensional.
3. Lattafa Khamrah: the benchmark tonka gourmand
Khamrah is the best-reviewed tonka bottle we stock: 4.21 on Fragrantica from more than 31,000 votes. Cinnamon, nutmeg and bergamot open over dates, praline, tuberose and Mahonial, and the base is vanilla, tonka bean, amberwood, myrrh, benzoin and Akigalawood (Fragrantica). Here the tonka sits beside vanilla and resins, and it is what gives the dry-down its toasted, almost bready warmth. Fragrantica lists it for women and men, and it is a cold-weather favourite. Our Lattafa Khamrah review walks through each stage on skin.

4. Lattafa Affection: nutty tonka with pistachio
Affection pairs tonka with nuts, which suits its almond facet perfectly. Pistachio, hazelnut and cassis buds open; raspberry, jasmine, lily of the valley and a milky lactonic note follow; vanilla and tonka close it (Fragrantica and lattafa.com agree on the materials). With no amber or oud in the base, the finish stays creamy and nutty. It rates 4.11 from 1,243 votes, is listed for women and men, and is part of the Lattafa Pride line.

5. Lattafa Angham Second Song: light, floral-gourmand tonka
The brightest gourmand here. Bergamot and pear blossom open; orange blossom, peony and praliné form the heart; vanilla, tonka, ambroxan and musk make the base (Fragrantica). Ambroxan and musk keep the tonka airy, so it adds a soft almond glow to the praliné rather than weight. Released in January 2026 and listed for women, it holds around 4.1 from more than 1,000 voters. A spring and summer pick.

Boozy tonka
6. Lattafa Teriaq Intense: tonka under plum liqueur
Saffron and bergamot open; plum liquor and cinnamon form the heart; tonka bean, amber and benzoin make up the base (Fragrantica). Tonka is one of only three base notes, so you smell it clearly once the boozy plum softens: it rounds off the liqueur and stops the resins turning sticky. It rates 4.39 from more than 4,800 votes and is listed for women and men. It is polarising, sweet and strong, so one or two sprays on a winter evening is the right dose. See our Teriaq Intense review before blind buying.

Floral tonka
7. Lattafa Her Confession: tonka under tuberose and incense
Tonka is a classic partner for white flowers, because it softens their heady edge (our guide to what tuberose smells like explains that edge). Cinnamon and Mystikal open; tuberose, jasmine, incense and Mahonial form the heart; vanilla, musk and tonka make up the base (Fragrantica). The tonka gives the incense-smoked tuberose a warm, creamy landing. Listed for women, it rates 3.91 from 3,478 votes and is an evening, cool-weather fragrance. Our Her Confession review goes deeper.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to the questions UK shoppers ask most.
What does tonka bean smell like in perfume?
Warm, sweet and slightly dry. Most people pick out toasted almond or marzipan, fresh hay, a little caramel or cherry, and a faint tobacco edge. It usually appears in the base, so you notice it in the dry-down rather than the first spray. Next to lavender it smells clean; next to spices and dates it smells like a bakery.
Is tonka bean the same as vanilla?
No. They are often paired, but they come from different plants and smell different. Vanilla’s main molecule is vanillin, which smells creamy and custard-like. Tonka’s is coumarin, which smells of hay and almond. Tonka is drier and more textured; vanilla is rounder and sweeter. Many Lattafa bases, such as Khamrah and Affection, use both together.
What is coumarin in perfume?
Coumarin is the aroma compound largely responsible for tonka’s smell. Encyclopaedia Britannica describes its odour as like new-mown hay, notes it was identified in the tonka bean in 1820, and records that William Henry Perkin first synthesised it in 1868. Perfumers use it for warmth and a sweet, dry, almond-hay effect, especially in base notes.
Is tonka bean masculine or feminine?
Neither. Tonka goes wherever its partners take it. In Fakhar, a men’s fragrance, it warms lavender and cedar. In Her Confession, a women’s fragrance, it softens tuberose and incense. In Khamrah, which Fragrantica lists for women and men, it sits with vanilla, dates and spice. Choose by the overall style, not the note.
Does tonka bean last long in perfume?
Tonka is a base note and a natural fixative, so it is one of the last things you smell as a fragrance fades and it helps lighter notes hold on. How long a whole perfume lasts depends on the full formula, the concentration and your skin. Each product page summarises what Fragrantica wearers report for that bottle.
Which tonka perfume should I try first?
For a crowd-pleaser, Khamrah: it is the most-voted bottle here on Fragrantica, rated 4.21 from more than 31,000 votes. For something fresh and office-friendly, Fakhar at £16.99. For a lighter, floral take in warm weather, Angham Second Song. All three were in stock at the time of writing.
Why does tonka sometimes smell like almond or cherry?
Coumarin has a sweet, nutty facet that many people read as almond, marzipan or cherry stone, particularly when it is paired with sweet notes. That is why Affection, with pistachio and hazelnut, makes the tonka seem nuttier, while Teriaq Intense, with plum liqueur, makes it seem more like dark fruit.
