Lattafa La African Drummer: Coconut, Ylang-Ylang and a Musky Vanilla Base
Lattafa’s own line is “Experience the pride of Africa”. In scent terms, this is a creamy, sunny white floral: milky coconut and bergamot over jasmine, orange blossom and ylang-ylang, settling on ambroxan, vanilla and musk.
Who Loves It, Who Doesn’t
African Drummer divides opinion. Its Fragrantica rating sat at 3.54 out of 5 from nearly 500 votes when we checked in October 2026, and the reviews behind that number explain the split.
- A tropical, creamy white-floral character
- Strong performance
- A sharp opening that seems to need maceration
- Ylang-ylang and jasmine that can overwhelm
- A synthetic edge for some noses

Inside the Bottle
Lattafa’s listing and Fragrantica give the same eight notes.
Coconut and bergamot open it. The coconut is milky and creamy, and the bergamot stops it feeling heavy for the first stretch. The heart is a classic yellow-and-white floral trio: jasmine, orange blossom and ylang-ylang. Ylang-ylang is creamy, slightly banana-like and very diffusive, and it is the note critics single out as too loud. The base puts ambroxan’s radiant woodiness under vanilla and musk, so the drydown is warm and skin-like rather than sugary.
Fragrantica’s voters rank the accords as musky, white floral, sweet and yellow floral first, with coconut fifth. So the coconut is part of the picture, but the florals and musk are the main event.
The Comparisons Reviewers Draw
Lattafa doesn’t sell African Drummer as a dupe. Fragrantica reviewers mention several fragrances when describing it: Juliette Has a Gun Lust for Sun, Guerlain Terracotta, Giardini di Toscana Bora Bora and Dolce & Gabbana The Only One Intense. The first three point to its sunny, tropical, solar-floral side. The spread shows it is a fragrance people place by mood rather than a straight copy of any one bottle. We report these as reviewer comparisons, not as our own claims.
About That Sharp Opening
Several reviewers say the first minutes are harsh and that the scent smooths out once the bottle has rested. This is common with Lattafa. Spraying a few times and leaving the bottle in a cool, dark cupboard for a few weeks often softens the edges. Our guide to Lattafa maceration explains why it happens and how long to give it.
Creamy Coconut You Can Order Today
Salty coconut and incense. Less floral and more beachy, at £15.49.
Our tropical Yara, sold as a Sol de Janeiro-style alternative. Sweeter and more playful.
Coconut and pineapple, for the lowest outlay of the three.

Two Related Bottles to Watch
Two other bottles from the same out-of-stock batch are worth knowing about. Lattafa Guinea shares African Drummer’s ylang-ylang, jasmine, vanilla and musk, but puts powdery iris at the centre instead of coconut. Lattafa Kashan from Lattafa Pride shares the ambroxan and musk, and leaves out the flowers for a dry, woody, raspberry-tinged scent.
When to Reach for It
- Warm weather, holidays and sunny weekends. Coconut and orange blossom are natural fits for summer.
- Daytime more than evening, though the vanilla-musk base carries into the evening comfortably.
- Light application. With ylang-ylang this prominent, two sprays is a sensible start, especially indoors.
- Anyone. Fragrantica lists it for women and men. Lattafa’s site files it under women but describes it as made “for both men and women”.
