Lattafa Asad Zanzibar — The £15.99 Salty Beach Scent You’ll Either Love or Leave
Lavender · Black Pepper · Coconut Water · Iris · Salt · Vanilla · Incense — 100ml Eau de Parfum, 100% authentic, dispatched from the UK.
Most Lattafa launches arrive pinned to a designer bottle. Asad Zanzibar doesn’t. It’s the 2024 summer member of the Asad line, and it smells like nothing else in it: salt air, coconut water and powdery iris, settling on vanilla and a thread of incense.
Zanzibar is the spice island off the Tanzanian coast, all white sand and warm sea, and Lattafa built the fragrance around that postcard. Asad (أسد) means “lion” in Arabic; this is the lion on holiday.
Lattafa Asad Zanzibar is an original composition, not a dupe. We’d rather say that plainly than borrow a designer name to sell it. It’s also genuinely polarising: on Fragrantica it sits at 3.23 out of 5 from more than 3,700 votes, with fans calling it a creamy, salty iris and critics finding the coconut-and-salt pairing odd.
So this page is here to help you work out which camp you’re in before you order. At £15.99 it’s the cheapest Asad we stock, and if you love the idea of a fresh Asad but don’t want coconut, we’ll point you to the one that fits.
The Scent Pyramid at a Glance
Seven notes across three tiers — the full Lattafa Asad Zanzibar notes list, in the order you’ll meet them.
Top Notes
First 30 min
An aromatic, slightly peppery start. Lavender gives a cool herbal lift, black pepper adds a dry bite. It reads fresh and a little barbershop before the beach arrives.
Black Pepper
Heart Notes
30 min–3 hrs
This is where the fragrance actually lives, and where people decide. Watery coconut, powdery iris and a noticeable salty edge — creamy and skin-like rather than sweet or tropical-cocktail.
Iris
Salt
Base Notes
Hours 3–8+
A soft, warm landing. Vanilla smooths everything out and a wisp of incense adds a gentle smoky depth, close to the skin.

The Lattafa Asad Zanzibar Perfume Notes, Layer by Layer
Top — Lavender, Black Pepper. Picture stepping off the plane into warm, salty air. The opening is the most conventional part of the fragrance: cool lavender and a dry crack of black pepper, fresh in a clean, slightly barbershop way. It’s pleasant and brief, and within half an hour it has handed over to the heart.
Heart — Coconut Water, Iris, Salt. The signature, and the part that divides people. This is coconut water, not coconut cream or suntan oil: watery, faintly milky, sitting on powdery iris with a real salty edge. When it works, it reads like warm skin after a swim. When it doesn’t, wearers describe the coconut-and-salt pairing as sour or milky. There isn’t much middle ground, which is exactly why we’re telling you now.
Base — Vanilla, Incense. The drydown is the easy part. Vanilla softens the salt, and a light, smoky incense gives it a little depth so it doesn’t fade into plain sweetness. This is where Asad Zanzibar spends most of the day: close to the skin, warm and quietly beachy.
Performance, Measured
Reviewer-reported figures from Fragrantica reviews and community ratings, at two to three sprays. Several wearers say the trail drops to a skin scent after three or four hours, and that the coconut-salt heart smooths out once the bottle has rested. Here’s what maceration does and why Lattafa bottles need it →
Who Asad Zanzibar Is For — and Who Should Skip It
There’s no designer bottle to measure Asad Zanzibar against, and a few reviewers’ passing comparisons aren’t enough for us to call it a dupe of anything. The more useful comparison is inside the Asad line itself, because the Asad Zanzibar Limited Edition keeps a fresh lavender-and-pepper opening (plus a marine note) and drops the coconut entirely. Here’s how to choose:
- Salty, skin-like, “after a swim” scents are your thing
- You like powdery iris and soft vanilla more than loud freshness
- You want a holiday and hot-weather bottle for £15.99
- You enjoy something unusual that nobody else in the office is wearing
- Coconut in any form has never worked for you
- You want a fresh scent without the milky, salty heart — the Limited Edition is the better pick
- You need beast-mode projection all day
- You want a cold-weather or evening bottle
Be honest with yourself about coconut before you order. That single note is the whole decision. If “salty coconut water and iris” makes you curious, this is probably your cheapest favourite. If it makes you wince, trust that instinct and look at the Limited Edition instead. We’d rather tell you now than process a return later.

Lattafa now sells two fragrances under the Zanzibar name, and they are genuinely different scents. We stock both, so there’s no incentive for us to push you either way — pick on the notes:

Short version: if you came here for the salty-coconut beach scent, stay on this page. If you want the fresh Zanzibar idea without the coconut, Lattafa Asad Zanzibar Limited Edition is the one — see Asad Zanzibar Limited Edition 100ml EDP here →
The rest of the line goes in very different directions: Asad is the spicy year-round original, Asad Elixir is smoky tobacco for evenings, and Asad Bourbon is a cocoa-vanilla winter bottle. Zanzibar is the only one built for the heat. Compare the whole Asad collection side by side →
The Lattafa Asad Zanzibar Bottle
The Lattafa Asad Zanzibar bottle shares the heavy-glass Asad silhouette of the rest of the line, dressed in its own colourway, and it looks and feels a good deal more expensive than £15.99 suggests. It holds a full 100ml of Eau de Parfum, not a travel size or body spray.
Lattafa Asad Zanzibar packaging is the standard Lattafa presentation — a printed outer carton carrying the official holographic authentication seal, which is what you should check first when it lands. The atomiser is even and fine-misted, and two or three sprays is all it needs.
What Asad Zanzibar Reviews Say
Asad Zanzibar reviews are split, and we think you should know that. On Fragrantica it holds 3.23 out of 5 from more than 3,700 ratings — well below the flagship Asad. Fans describe a creamy, salty iris with a genuine beach-holiday feel; critics say the coconut-and-salt pairing turns sour or milky on their skin. Very few people are neutral about it.
On performance, reviewers commonly report six to ten hours on skin, with decent projection for the first few hours before it settles into a close skin scent. Two caveats come up again and again. First, several wearers say a fresh bottle improves after a few weeks to a few months of rest, with the coconut-salt heart becoming smoother. Second, it’s a warm-weather scent — reviewers overwhelmingly place it in summer. The price is the one thing almost everybody agrees on.

Good to Know Before You Buy
- It’s a hot-weather fragrance. Spring and summer, daytime, beach holidays and long warm evenings. In cold weather the salty heart can feel out of place.
- The coconut is watery, not creamy-sweet. Think coconut water and salt on skin, not suncream or piña colada. If that sounds odd to you, it probably will be.
- Marketed for men, wears unisex. The iris-vanilla drydown is soft enough for anyone who likes salty, skin-like scents.
- Two or three sprays is the sweet spot. Start with two until you know whether the heart works on your skin.
- Give a fresh bottle a few weeks. Reviewers commonly report the coconut-salt heart smoothing out after a rest in a cool, dark cupboard.
- Also listed as “Lattafa Asad Zanzibar Eau de Parfum”, “Asad Zanzibar by Lattafa for Men 3.4 oz EDP Spray”, “Lattafa Perfumes Asad Zanzibar” and “Zanzibar Asad Lattafa”. Some listings write the notes as “sea lavender” and “salty coconut water” — same fragrance, you’re on the right page.

Written by Shaheen Shah Abrar, Founder of Royal Scents. Reviewers find two or three sprays on warm days is the sweet spot, and it’s worth reading alongside the Limited Edition it gets confused with. Zanzibar is the salty, coconut one. If that sounds good, it’s the best-value Asad we sell; if it doesn’t, trust that instinct.
