Cold, green and slightly sweet, like biting a chilled apple outdoors.

Opening: mint hits immediately — properly cooling, not toothpaste-sharp — with green apple right behind it and lemon lifting the whole thing. This is the phase everyone recognises, and it is the best-executed part of the fragrance.

Heart: geranium brings a green, faintly rosy-metallic edge, clary sage adds a herbal, almost tobacco-adjacent dryness, and a marine note keeps everything cool and open. It reads clean and confident rather than sporty.

Seven shared materials — lemon, mint, apple, geranium, clary sage, patchouli and cedarwood. The heart pairing in particular is telling: geranium with clary sage is an unusual combination, and both fragrances use exactly it.

Where they part company is the base. Eros finishes on vanilla, sandalwood and AmberMax — that warm, sweet, slightly powdery drydown is what makes it smell expensive and what people actually remember. Blue Sapphire has none of it. You get the famous mint-and-apple opening almost intact, then a plain patchouli-cedar finish instead of Eros’s sweet amber.

So: if you love the Eros opening, this gets you remarkably close for £21.99 against £96 for Eros EDT 100ml on the UK high street. If what you love is the warm vanilla drydown, Blue Sapphire will feel like it stops halfway. We would rather say that now than have it come back.

Our review

What it gets right: the opening, and it is not close. The mint-apple-lemon accord is genuinely well made — cold, crisp and convincing, with none of the harsh synthetic bite cheap fresh fragrances usually have. For the first hour it is difficult to tell what you paid.

What it doesn’t: the finish. Once the top notes burn off there is not much underneath, and the patchouli-cedar base is plain next to what Eros does with vanilla and sandalwood. Longevity is only average too.

Verdict: excellent value as an everyday fresh workhorse and one of the better Eros-style alternatives around. Buy it for daytime and warm weather, not as a signature that has to carry an evening.
