Most mango perfumes are all juice and no structure: bright for an hour, then gone. Lattafa Ajayeb Dubai Portrait is built the other way round. The fruit is on top of a proper woody base, so once the orange and mango settle you are left with oud, amber, sandalwood and musk rather than a faint sweet smear on your wrist.
Lattafa released it in 2023, the same year as Ajayeb Dubai, and both its own listing and Fragrantica class it as unisex. It is an original composition: Lattafa names no designer it is based on, and neither do we. Fragrantica voters describe its character with six main accords, and the first two, fruity and tropical, tell you exactly where it starts.
A day with Portrait, in four stages
The stages are based on the order of the note pyramid, which is how Lattafa and Fragrantica both list it. How quickly you move through them depends on your skin and the weather, so treat the sequence as the guide rather than any clock.
Every note, and why it’s there
Lattafa’s official page and Fragrantica agree on all nine notes, which isn’t always the case with Lattafa releases. The one material worth explaining is osmanthus. It is a small Asian blossom whose scent sits somewhere between apricot, peach skin and suede, which makes it a natural bridge between the mango above it and the oud below. It is the reason Portrait reads as one smooth arc rather than fruit stuck on top of wood.
The oud here is a supporting player, not the headline. With sandalwood and musk alongside it, the base is soft and rounded rather than the barnyard or medicinal oud some people dislike. If oud-heavy scents usually put you off, Portrait is a gentle way in.
Portrait or Ajayeb Dubai?
Both launched in 2023 and share a name, so they get mixed up. On paper they have almost nothing in common:
Pick Portrait for fresh fruit with a woody finish you can wear in daylight. Pick Ajayeb Dubai if you want coffee and butterscotch for evenings. Sandalwood is the only note they share.
How Fragrantica voters describe it
Portrait holds an average of 3.78 out of 5 from 1,485 ratings on Fragrantica at the time of writing. Its main accords, in the order shown there:
Order as listed on Fragrantica; bar lengths show rank only. Performance varies by skin, so we don’t print hour counts.
When it works best
- Spring and summer days. Citrus and mango open up in warm air; this is a fragrance for sunshine more than for a winter coat.
- Into the evening. The oud-amber base gives it more weight than a typical fruit scent, so it moves from day to evening without feeling out of place.
- Anyone, any day. Unisex on both sources, and nothing in the pyramid is dark or animalic enough to feel out of place at work.
- At £13.99, an easy blind buy for someone curious about oud who isn’t sure they’ll like it.
