Lattafa Dynasty: The One That Isn’t a Copy of Anything

Let’s be honest about what Lattafa mostly does. They take a designer fragrance, rebuild it beautifully, and sell it for a tenth of the price. We stock plenty of those, we’ll happily tell you exactly which is which, and there is no shame in it.

Dynasty is not one of those.

It’s a rooibos tea and suede composition by a named perfumer — Alex Lee — and the fragrance community noticed immediately. One wearer said that if you’d told him in 2024 this was a Lattafa release, he’d never have believed you. Another called it royalty in a bottle and said it goes head to head with fragrances costing hundreds more. A third, who went in hoping it was a cheap copy of a $175 niche rooibos scent, reported honestly that it isn’t a copy — not even a distant relative.

It’s just good. On its own terms. And after a decade of clones, that turns out to be the most surprising thing Lattafa could have done.

How It Wears

Top — Bergamot, Ginger, Clary Sage, Nutmeg, Raspberry. A bright, spiky, slightly bitter opening. Bergamot and ginger lead — sharp, zesty, almost fizzing — with clary sage bringing a dry herbal edge and nutmeg a dusty warmth. And then a small, tart raspberry, glinting through the middle of it. The raspberry is faint, but it’s what stops the whole thing being austere.

Heart — Rooibos Tea, Suede. This is why the bottle exists. Rooibos is not a black tea — it’s redder, earthier, sweeter, softer, with a gentle woody bitterness. And it’s wrapped in suede: smooth, velvety, faintly animalic in the best way. The two together are extraordinary. One wearer described it, perfectly, as smelling like an expensive, luxurious bar of tea soap. It’s warm, it’s clean, it’s a little strange, and it’s completely absorbing.

Base — Amberwood, Cedarwood, Cashmeran. The landing is modern and dry. Cedar gives it a clean woody spine, amberwood a golden radiance, and cashmeran that soft, slightly musky, cashmere-jumper warmth that makes people want to stand nearer to you. It’s polished without being sterile.

Give It Thirty Minutes. Please.

Here’s the single most useful thing we can tell you, and no other shop will.

The opening is rough. Bright, sharp, a bit aggressive, a bit bitter. If you spray this in a shop and walk out after ten minutes, you will not buy it — and you will have missed the entire fragrance.

One wearer said it outright: he suspects people are reviewing Dynasty after ten minutes, because the opening is rough and the drydown is magnificent. He’s right. Half an hour in, the ginger settles, the tea emerges, the suede unfurls, and it becomes something else entirely.

This isn’t a maceration problem — you don’t need to rest the bottle for a month. You just need to be patient for thirty minutes. Spray it, get on with your morning, and come back to your own wrist at eleven. That’s when you’ll understand what people are talking about.

Quiet Luxury — and Yes, Some People Find That Boring

We’d rather be straight with you than sell you the wrong bottle.

Dynasty is restrained. It does not fill a room. It has none of the loud, sweet, attention-seeking sugar of most modern designer releases and most of the Lattafa catalogue. Some reviewers find it dull — one called it a big nothing burger, and another simply shrugged.

They’re not wrong. They just wanted something else.

What Dynasty is, in the words of one wearer who understood it completely, is restrained, self-assured, and suited to someone whose taste is a little more refined — clean and stoic, but with an inviting warmth underneath. It’s the fragrance equivalent of a very good coat in a plain colour. It doesn’t announce you. It just makes everything about you look more considered.

So: if you want a compliment monster that clears a lift, buy Khamrah and we’ll happily sell you one. If you want to walk into a meeting smelling like the most competent person in it — this is your bottle.

Performance

Solid, and better than it has any right to be at this price. Expect six to eight hours on skin — often more — with moderate, close projection, and considerably longer on clothing. By hour six it becomes a skin scent, but a beautiful one.

Three or four sprays is plenty. This one doesn’t need force. It’s office-safe by design: present, never intrusive.

When to Wear It

Mild weather to cold. Autumn and winter are its home, and it’s superb in an office. Be careful in real heat — the suede in the heart gets thick and heavy when it’s genuinely hot, and one wearer specifically warns against it in high temperatures. Spring, autumn, winter: yes. An August heatwave: probably not.

A Note on the Bottle

Tall, crown-inspired, and with a distinctive red stem running through the cap that wearers keep comparing to Dior Homme. It looks considerably more expensive than it is, and it makes a very good gift — particularly for anyone who likes tea, or who has quietly outgrown the sweet stuff.

Who’s It For?

  • Tea-fragrance people. This is one of the very few affordable ones, and it’s one of the good ones.
  • Anyone who’s outgrown the sweet gourmands. If Khamrah and Yara now feel like a lot, Dynasty is where you go next.
  • Office wearers. Genuinely office-safe without being boring.
  • Anyone buying a gift and hedging. It’s unisex, it’s inoffensive, it smells expensive, and it works on almost anyone.
  • Not for you if you want to be noticed from across a car park. It won’t do that and it isn’t trying to.

Why Buy From Royal Scents

Every bottle is genuine Lattafa, sourced properly and stored in the UK. And you’ll notice that on most of our pages we tell you exactly which designer fragrance a Lattafa is copying — and that on this one, we’ve told you it isn’t copying anything at all. That’s the point. When we say something is a dupe, you can believe it, because we don’t say it when it isn’t true.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lattafa Dynasty a dupe of anything?
No. Dynasty is an original Lattafa creation by perfumer Alex Lee, and the fragrance community has been unusually clear about this — reviewers state plainly that it is not a clone or an inspiration of any designer fragrance. One reviewer specifically hoped it would be a copy of Chris Collins’ African Rooibos and reported that it is not a dupe of it, or even a distant relative.

What are the notes in Lattafa Dynasty?
Top notes are bergamot, ginger, clary sage, nutmeg and raspberry. The heart is rooibos tea and suede. The base is amberwood, cedarwood and cashmeran. Be aware that some large retailers publish entirely incorrect pyramids for Dynasty, citing jasmine, rose or musk — none of which are in it.

What does Lattafa Dynasty smell like?
A bright, spicy, slightly bitter opening of bergamot and ginger, giving way to a heart of rooibos tea and smooth suede, over a dry base of cedar, amberwood and cashmeran. Wearers frequently describe the drydown as smelling like an expensive bar of tea soap — clean, warm and refined rather than sweet.

Why does the opening of Dynasty smell harsh?
The first ten minutes are genuinely sharp and a little rough. This is normal and it passes. Give it thirty minutes and the ginger settles, the tea emerges and the suede softens the whole composition. Judging Dynasty on its opening is the most common mistake people make with it.

Is Lattafa Dynasty long lasting?
Yes. Expect six to eight hours or more on skin with moderate, close projection, and considerably longer on clothing. Three or four sprays is sufficient; it does not need to be over-applied.

Is Lattafa Dynasty unisex?
Yes, though it leans masculine in wear. The tea, suede and dry woods give it a refined character that works comfortably on anyone.

What season is Lattafa Dynasty best for?
Autumn, winter and mild weather, and it excels in an office. The suede in the heart can become heavy in genuine heat, so it is less suited to high summer.

Written and wear-tested by Shaheen Shah Abrar, Founder of Royal Scents. Tested through an Oxford autumn. We nearly wrote it off in the first ten minutes, which would have been a serious mistake.
